Statement
Mijn drijfveer is een zoektocht naar de intrinsieke kwaliteiten van klei, haar ontstaansverhaal en vooral mij open stellen voor het verhaal dat het materiaal zelf te vertellen heeft. De eerste keer dat ik de kleigroeve in Boom zag, was ik ongeveer tien jaar oud. Een hoge, gelaagde, machtige muur van klei. Bij ieder volgend bezoek en tijdens verschillende werkperiodes in de groeve groeide het besef dat die immense gelaagde kleiwand heel veel verhalen en betekenissen in zich draagt. Ik ontwikkelde een werkhouding vanuit zintuiglijk intuïtief openstaan voor het materiaal. Studeren door te experimenteren. Aanvankelijk zocht ik middels keramische processen naar de expressieve kracht van klei op het grensgebied tussen klei en ‘steen’. Die onderzoekende houding heb ik verder doorgetrokken naar andere situaties zoals: de dynamiek van de Schelde in een bocht in Antwerpen; de veranderende balans tussen zoet en zout in de bodem van Zeeland; de eolische sedimenten in de woestijn van New Mexico; het ontstaan van klei, en de erosie van keramiek. Steeds gaat het om het volgen, het in gang zetten van processen om die te observeren, zoekend naar samenhangen, naar verschillen, naar de uitdrukkingskracht van het materiaal.
